The state experiences flash floods particularly in Western Ghats including Krishna and Upper Bhima basins. The 2005 and 2006 floods caused heavy damages to the lives and properties in the basins. The Govt. of Maharashtra constituted technical committee under the chairmanship of Shri N.D.Vadanere, Secretary, WRD GoM. As per recommendation of this committee Basin Simulation Division, Pune was established in the year 2007 for Basin Simulation and flood forecasting for Krishna and Bhima Basins. For real time data collection various types of sensors are installed to measure various hydro-meteorological parameters like Rainfall, weather parameters, reservoir and river water level etc at prominent locations in the entire Krishna Bhima basins. This Data is collected at Data centre for Krishna and Bhima basin which is established at Sinchan Bhavan, Pune and is made available to all stakeholders through website www.rtsfros.com under “Real Time Data” tab For Krishna and Bhima Basins Flood forecasting Modelling system is developed which is based on MIKE software and consists of:- A Hydrological model (Rainfall-Runoff model) for generating runoff from a number of sub catchments and Hydrodynamic model for routing flows through the river and reservoir system to compute flows, water levels. This model gives real time flood forecast for period of 2 days from the time of forecast.
